Hi

I am running a samsung netbook (N110) with 7 starter edition, 2 GB ram, 1.6 Gh cpu.

I recently had some problem with installing Windows 7 SP1, and I needed to access the router (HG520s) to swop from wpa to open for testing. When I input the address it asked for the p/word, however when I entered it and pressed 'enter' the screen blinked and then it asked for the p/word again. I used Firefox and IE, IE did not even blink, on FF the dropdown appears and then immediately disappears, this asks if you require FF to remember the p/word. I have checked the options in FF & IE however I cannot find anything that refers to this behaviour.

Any ideas?

Hi frank17

In Firefox if you click on the "tools" button to the top left and then select the "Options" option you will be shown a new screen - click on the "Security" tab and then ensure "Remember passwrods for sites" is unticked.

Once you have done this clear the Firefox cache by pressing ctr+shift+delete together and selecting "clear now".

The default usernam and password for your router are both set as "admin" (case sensitive).

My regards

Barney

It was ticked, so I unticked and cleared the data. Still the dialog box fields clear and requests the p/word again - no blink now though!

Hi frank17,

After entering http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your browser, the username and password that you need to provide are those for the router. If you have not changed the default login details, then both username and password are admin. Is that what you have entered? If you have entered what you believe to be the correct details and you are still unable to login in, then you might try reseting the router back to factory settings. If you do that, you would need to set the router up again (as you did when you first installed it) and you would also need your TalkTalk broadband username and password. The TalkTalk help pages here and here (for wireless) guide you through the setup process.

Hi Nigel

Yes that is what I have done, I rechecked with the TT p/word line to be sure that was the correct p/word and it confirmed it.

Hi frank17,

I am not clear about which bit your response "Yes that is what I have done" refers to.

I apologise if I am telling you something that you already know but it's best to be clear. The username and password for the router login and the username and password for TalkTalk broadband are two different sets of login details. The password that you confirmed using the TalkTalk password helpline is the password for the TalkTalk broadband.

You need to enter the router username and password (default setting for both is admin) to access the router admin pages via http://192.168.1.1. Have you entered admin for each of username and password?

The TalkTalk broadband login details must be entered on the WAN Setting page (which can be accessed under Basic on the left of the router admin window). There is no need to change these if they are already correctly set.

Hi Nigel

Sorry if I did not make myself clear.

Yes I have entered http://192.168.1.1 and then 'admin' twice to enter the router via the login dialog box. Then I press O/K and the screen blinks, the dropdown box drops down and immediately scrolls up again, I have tried to beat it but I think it is not accepting the entry at all!

I checked with the representative on the telephone when the internet connection dropped out and they confirmed 'admin' as the p/word.

I already knew this but I checked as I have had problems before.

I then gave up with the representative when they stated the problem was with my internal setup - although I had not changed
any part of the system wiring. I went and had a cup of tea and then the internet reconnected, it does this intermittently and last year I spent two weeks with the router hard wired to check it was not my wireless connection! I only call for help if it is off more than an hour as it was last week. They said they could see several dropouts but still claimed it was at my end not under their control.

An hour may not seem a long time but it is incredibly frustrating when you are dealing with Ebay/Amazon in the middle of a transaction.

At the moment there is a connection however I was having problems with a netbook and when you are trying to see how different connections work and it had been suggested that the wireless device maybe reacting to the issue of Windows 7 SP1, however it turned out to be the antivirus programme which caused the problem.

Anyway I could not access the router configuration page and here I am now.

I have removed the tick from the remember passwords box in Tools and now it repeats the the described procedure but now it does not drop down and scroll up quickly at all.

FF has recently updated and I hoped that this was a cure however it still does it, so no luck there.

Failing all else, you can do a factory reset on the router, there is a small reset hole by the power switch, use a paper clip and press the switch inside for around 20 seconds, this will reset the log in details to the default;

admin/admin combination.

If you need to re-enter any other router details again after this, they are these;

* VPI: 0
* VCI: 38
* MTU: 1432
* DNS settings: Leave these blank or 0.0.0.0 so the settings are provided automatically from the network
* Authentication: CHAP
* Encapsulation: PPP over ATM (PPPoA). VC-MUX

You will also need your TalkTalk Broadband username and password. You'll find these in the welcome letter we sent. If you cannot find your welcome letter and cannot remember your broadband username and password, you can call free of charge from a TalkTalk landline on 0870 0875 562 to retrieve them.

It will normally remember these though

as for the wirless issues, try updating the drivers or changing channel etc, look here for help with this;

I am reluctant to do a factory reset because I am trying to access the router and I believe this is an issue with the software on my computer, the wireless issue was an intereaction with the a/virus programme (only affecting W 7 ) - a replacement did not give the same symptoms - the default DNS is too slow. I would be more inclined to an OS reload but it is the same issue with both windows 7 and vista!
